Seriale - SUPERNATURAL: Winchesterowie kontra reszta świata i zaświata

Caitriona - Śro 30 Wrz, 2009 15:41

Admete dobrze prawi!

Cytat:
This is the episode recap for the third episode of the fifth season of Supernatural, 'Free to Be You and Me.' This was probably (hopefully) one of the gloomiest episodes of the show, yet it was as intriguing and full of double meanings and symbolism to pick apart and analyze as always, so let's get started!

This episode review is also featured on Out of the Box, a television blog with theories and discussion about all the best TV shows out there, so please check it out if you enjoyed this post!

"What are you doing, Sam? Running away?"
The first scene of the episode was Sam in bed (I guess now he has his own room he can sleep with no clothes on? Well... that's nice), with Jessica! I've never been a big fan of Jessica, but I absolutely loved her in this scene, and their interaction in general. When push comes to shove I'll usually pick Jensen Ackles as the more versatile actor of the pair, but sometimes Jared Padalecki really surprises me with his talent - this was one of those times! His "I miss you" line was so heartfelt, and it's interesting because of course Jessica was killed off at the very beginning of the series so we never really got a chance to experience the Sam/Jessica relationship, but clearly her death has been killing Sam inside ever since... this scene really called our attention to that fact. The chemistry was between Jared and Adrianne Palicki was amazing; the vibe between Sam and Jess was both pleasant and familiar while at the same time full of longing and sadness. "You knew there was something dark inside of you," Jessica states, beginning this episode's theme of Truths vs. Lies. Underneath the surface, 'Free to Be You and Me' was all about the lies we convince ourselves and others are true in order to protect ourselves, versus the truths we fight to uncover, as hard and painful as this can be at times. It sure is easier to just go along with the lie, to accept what everyone tells you even when it feels wrong, rather than to stand up and fight for it. All three leads - Sam, Dean and Castiel - took a stand for what they believed in this week, and now they will all have to live with the consequences of their bold actions (though... most likely not for very long, eh?).

Jessica continues to break down Sam, preying on his weaknesses, telling him that everyone closest to him always get hurt. "I will never make that mistake again", Sam insists. He left Dean behind because he does not want the darkness inside him to kill the people closest to him again like he felt it did Jessica and his mother. Poor boy feels so much guilt, maybe even more than Dean does, but he hides is better. That's why I think Dean usually overshadows Sam emotionally; as tough as Dean is, the emotions are usually written all over his face, whereas Sam is more reserved and quiet. It's always the quiet ones...

"Eat it, Twilight." Muahaha.
Sam and Dean are now in different places, as the montage illustrated. They both have empty, serious expressions on their faces as they settle into a new routine alone. Doing the job, living your life, it doesn't really matter what you do when you're separated from the people you love, and I think if anything, this is the lesson the boys will learn from this separation period. No matter how messed up their family might be, it's been what has gotten them through everything they've faced, and they will need each other's support to get through what is still to come. For Dean, the only thing that kept him going through the hunts was the fact that Sam was always there beside him. The darkness was always punctuated by their little pranks and signs of affection for each other (which is also what makes the show so enjoyable and different to your typical horror/action drama), and now that that's gone, Dean has to re-evaluate who he is and what his place is in the world. The juxtaposition of their actions in the montage - opening the trunk, cutting the vampire/lemons, washing the table/car etc. - really emphasises how connected the brothers are, and how even in their differences they are similar. The blood on Dean's face as he kills the vampire mirrors the scene from the episode 'Bloodlust' in season 2 where they killed vampires with Gordon, and it was Sam who then pulled Dean back from straying too far into the dark territory - ironically enough, Sam left to protect Dean from the darkness, but I think that his absence would have allowed Dean to slip into it all by himself if it hadn't been for Castiel.

When Dean looks over to Sam's empty seat... maybe they do need this separation to realise how even if things are bad between them, life is better when they're together, but it's as painful to watch as I expected that it would be.

By the way, has anyone else noticed that Dean's voice is just going deeper and deeper every week?? Maybe Jensen misunderstood the producers when they told him that Dean would be going "darker" this season, or maybe it's a byproduct of working with Misha Collins? It sure emphasizes his dark mood, but my goodness, I almost can't make out what he's saying. Maybe they teased him too much on set with his 'Yellow Fever' scream. Maybe we'll never know and it'll be one of those unsolved mysteries of the show... Maybe I'm the only one who cares... right. Moving on.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Angel!!! I think here we have our spinoff, y/y??
So Thelma and Louise go to Maine... while "Keith" meets yet another Oedipal complex, who'll play darts with him for world peace. But Sammeh spots a catastrophe nearby, and while you can take the boy out of the hunt... well, you know what they say. He puts up a fair fight though, refusing to fight the good fight to the point where his redshirt Hunter friends pay the price. Scrolling through his phone, Sam debates calling Dean before calling Bobby instead - Bobby, who is still in a wheelchair and unable to do anything besides assign other Hunters to the jobs he hears about. I suppose that's something, though, and that might be how he can continue the fight: by being "command central" for other Hunters, sort of how the Roadhouse worked in season 2 with Bobby delegating jobs from his house.

Meanwhile, Thelma and Louise are not having much luck with the interrogation of the police officer, because Cas isn't very adept at the undercover thing - providing one of the few comic relief moments of this episode. But once they find the empty vessel, we get confirmation of what I'm sure we all feared: if... or that is, WHEN Michael eventually takes possession of Dean, it will be far worse than insanity - most likely, Dean will die if this happens. Which would be a poetic end, sure, but come on, hasn't he sacrificed enough?! I mean, I thought he'd sacrificed enough in season 2, and that was before he even went to Hell!

"We're humans. And when humans want something really, really bad, we lie. [...] Because that's how you become president."
As I said, this episode is all about lying, and manipulating, and uncovering the truth in all the chaos. That's the thing about Supernatural, no one really ever says what they feel (except occasionally Dean) or shares all the information they have, and this need for secrecy is what drove a wedge between Sam and Dean in the first place, everything from when Dean didn't tell Sam that he sold his soul to bring him back to when Sam neglected to tell Dean where his powers came from. Now both Sam and Dean are confronted with this fact, and without having to account for their actions to each other they are able to re-evaluate the lies they have told each other and themselves in order to construct a better world. Castiel is symbolically being introduced to the concept of lying, something that comes so naturally to the Winchesters but which he just doesn't understand. WHY do people lie? Well... it's how the world works, and so far we've all just accepted it as part of the show, but maybe we should take a page out of Castiel's book and ask ourselves why the characters tell the lies they do. What purpose do the lies serve, if any? And are the lies better or worse than the truths? Lucifer's big selling point is that he never lies - but he's still the devil, so what does that tell us about the virtue of this fact? I think the characters are learning that it's more about being true to yourself than anything else, and by the end of the episode I think that Dean has realized this.

The 4.5 Billion Year Old Virgin
It's the last night on Earth... and as we know, Dean is never one to let anyone die a virgin. It's srs bsns time,

so the new bff's head out to find Castiel a woman. First of all I just have to say, Castiel's face in the bar? Priiiiceless! He was terrified, the poor thing! Aside from that though, I feel like the scene could have been a lot funnier - Dean and Cas are a pretty unlikely team to begin with, and the idea of the two of them working together to pick up women could have been expanded and made a lot funnier if the writers had wanted to make it so. Personally I think the dark, gloomy tone is being kept very consciously consistent, because it IS the end of the world after all, and the brothers are separated, and things really couldn't get any worse. We need to feel down before they can bring us back up. But at least Dean finally has some fun in this scene... even though really, Dean, you haven't had this much fun in years? Ouch. I have to disagree, I think Sam and Dean have really been happy together over all, but I do understand the need to put emphasis on his feelings of liberation in preparation for his revelation in the car at the end. It doesn't have to be one extreme or the other though; I think that Dean is focusing heavily on the negative aspects of his relationship with Sam. Once he's got some distance and perspective, he will remember the good times as well.

Look out, it's an optimist!
"No one has ever done anything so bad that they can't be forgiven. That they can't change." Diner girl turned out to be more than just another Oedipal complex for Sam after all, then. At dinner she admits that she used to be an alcoholic, but she has been sober for three years now. This was a non-biased outsider giving an alternate perspective to all the people/demons telling Sam that he can never change, and it was just what he needed to hear.

Sam has always been the idealistic of the brothers, believing in the good in people and in choice over circumstance, yet now no matter what he does, he cannot escape his own categorization. He has darkness inside of him, he is evil, he can't stop it, it IS going to happen..... if you keep saying it, eventually it will be true, but Sam is finally beginning to fight against it. Because diner girl reminded him of who he used to be and what he used to believe: people CAN change. HE can change.

When the hunters come back and want him to drink the demon blood and "Hulk out", it's a test Sam has to pass on the road to recovery. And he passes with flying colors, spitting out the demon blood even after it has literally been forced into his mouth. Way to go Sam!

In the final scene, Jessica is finally revealed to be, as we might have expected, Lucifer. I knew that Lucifer would come looking for Sam! But... damn, I was really hoping against hope that the season would not culminate in a Lucifer-as-Sam vs. Michael-as-Dean ultimate vessel showdown, but it's really looking like that's what will happen, isn't it? Sam is Lucifer's true vessel - "of course it had to be you," Lucifer tells him, and I honestly think this response was only for the audience's benefit. Because of course it HAD to be Sam, story-wise, or we wouldn't care. At this point though, I'm just really at a loss for how it will all turn out. I mean, I know that the producers know that this story is all about Sam and Dean and their relationship as brothers, yet usually in Supernatural the plot is pretty straight forward: when Dean was told he had a year to live, he did. When Sam was told he would start the apocalypse, he did. When we were told Lucifer would rise, he did. So when Lucifer now tells us that Sam will end up being his vessel, my guess is that he WILL be. I suppose the wild card here is really God, because if Cas and Dean find him and convince him to help, it might prevent Sam and Dean having to fight each other... then again, after all this hype, wouldn't it be a bit of a Breaking Dawn cop-out if it didn't happen? I've said before I think the brothers won't make it past the finale (even though it would be so poetic to see them drive off in the Impala together in the end), but if they're going down they should go together, fighting side by side, and not as vessels with new personalities who we don't know or empathize with.

All the best teenage mutant ninja angels have daddy issues.
Dean and Castiel trap Raphael (who is terrifying, by the way), and demand to know the location of God. "He's dead," TMNA tells them. I still say he's more likely in hiding! But Raphael is unhappy with his daddy (as Dean said, this industry runs on lousy fathers), and he admits that he and the other arch angels are just tired of it all and want it to be over - echoing Dean's sentiments back from 'Croatoan' in season 2, when Sam got infected with the virus and Dean just refused to go on alone.

But Castiel is relentless: he knows that God is alive, just like Dean knew that John was alive.

In the end, Cas has taken Sam's place next to Dean in the car. At this point Dean admits that life is easier without Sam, and finally realises how chained he's been to his family. Dean has truly been messed up for most of his life, and while sometimes it has seemed like the only bright points were times with his dad and brother, his attachment to them was actually a large reason for his unhappiness, and I think now Dean is finally experiencing the need for independence that drove Sam to leave Dean and John behind to go to college. As upsetting as it feels to have Dean renounce Sam's importance in this way, I believe it's as important a step in the recovery process as Sam spitting out the demon blood. Ever since Dean sold his soul to bring Sam back, the brothers' relationship has been spiralling ever so slowly downward, and now they've finally reached breaking point - where they can both, separately, sort out the issues that hold them back (Sam's dark side, Dean's family issues), after which their relationship can hopefully be salvaged, happier and healthier than before.

Because that's the thing with building your relationship on lies and half-truths; if you can't be true to yourself then it will never work out. Now that both Sam and Dean have a chance to learn who they are and who they want to be as separate people, they'll be able to come back more honest and open, and as such work much better together as a team.

All in all I thought this was a great episode, very importance in terms of character development. Poor Sam, just as things were looking up he gets yet another nasty surprise. Will he tell Dean about it, or try to go through Bobby again, or will he continue to hide and hope it will go away? The next episode doesn't look like it will be exploring any of that but it does look AWESOME, I can't wait to review it for y'all! Let me know what you thought of this episode in the comments, and see you next week!

I takie fajne grafiki wygrzebałam ku uciesze naszych oczu:

A to mnie totalnie rozwaliło:

:rotfl:

No, właśnie nie wiem.

Cytat:
jego mina na widok prawie pólnagiejdziewoi
w bieli, jak należy zauważyć :P
Castiel rulez :serce: - genialnie zagrane i wymyślone sceny z odznaką, rozdziewiczania, i zniknięcie na koniec przemowy Deana - a odnośnie Sama to znowu krew, ojoj :(

BeeMeR - Pią 02 Paź, 2009 14:48

Zapomniałąm zaś dodać do poprzedniego odcinka 5x02, że niezmiernie podobała mi się współpraca braci przy pozbawianiu pierścienia :P - przypominająca wspólne zarżnięcie Ruby :uzi: i to daje mi nadzieję, mimo rozstania braci

Cytat:
Perfidny ten Lucek!

Obejrzałam "The End". O. Ja. Cię. Pitolę.
Baaardzo dobry odcinek! :thud:

Admete - Pią 02 Paź, 2009 16:48

Ja niedawno do domu wróciłam.

  :excited:
jestem zachwycona pomysłem :oklaski:
*nie spoileruje, nie spoileruje, nie spoileruje ;) *

BeeMeR - Pią 02 Paź, 2009 18:25

odcinek 5x04 jest genialny! :excited:

a motyw różowych majteczek cudny ;)

No bo w końcu podwójny był. Redemption, yay! Obie z Riellą prawie krzyczałyśmy do tv - co robisz idioto! ;) To pod adresem Deana ;)
Rozmowa w ogrodzie róż - aaa! Nie mam słów. Piękna. Wzruszająca. Evil!Sam i zrozpaczony Dean.

:excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited:
Cass tantrysta! :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited:
To będzie długie pięć lat. ;)

Admete - Pią 02 Paź, 2009 21:14

Podwójna dawka Deana :D przekroczona norma.

Jeszcze zabawna sprawa - Świadkowie Jehowy jako donosiciele

praedzio - Pią 02 Paź, 2009 21:15

Spoko.

P.S. Widzę, że upadłe anioły ukochały czerwone róże. ;) Albo Kripke oglądał HEX. To nie pierwszy motyw z różą, jaki widzę. Na mnie zawasze działa... :ops1:
